Lipoprotein(a)--also called Lp(a)-- is a lipoprotein subclass. Studies have identified Lp(a) as a risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

According to the book "Beyond cholesterol: 7 life-saving heart disease tests that your doctor may not give you." Lipoprotein(a) ranges are as follows:

• Desirable: < 14 mg/dL
• Borderline risk: 14 - 30 mg/dL
• High risk: 31 - 50 mg/dL
• Very high risk: > 50 mg/dL
