About This Food

Description

Chicory is a native of India and member of the daisy family. Also known as curly endive, this leafy vegetable has curly, bitter-tasting leaves that are often used as part of a salad or cooked as greens.

Roasted chicory comes from the roasted, ground roots of certain varieties of chicory. It's used as a coffee substitute and blended with coffee to create "New Orleans" or "Creole" coffee - a popular beverage in Louisiana.

Witloof (white leaf) chicory, also known as Belgian endive, is the sprouted roots of chicory. It has pale white leaves and a cylindrical shape perfect for scooping up dips or filling for an elegant appetizer.

Selecting & Storing

Choose leaves that are brightly colored and crisp. Store unwashed greens in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
