Add the butter to a large pot over medium heat. When melted, add the garlic and onion and cook, stirring for 5 minutes.
Add the broth, heavy cream and broccoli. Bring to a boil; then reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes.
Add the cheese, stirring until melted.
Remove from heat and blend to a creamy consitency using an immersion blender.
Serve.
