Maple syrup is the concentrated sap of a variety of maple trees found only in North America. It is 66% sugar in composition, with sucrose being the most prevalent sugar.
While most artificial syrups add processed sugars, pure maple syrup is considered a healthier alternative and holds a variety of benefits. There are trace levels of vitamins in maple syrup, but more importantly it has plant-based antioxidants called polyphenols that help fight cancer and prevent aging when applied topically. It is also a good source of manganese and zinc, two key players in boosting your immune system.
Like other sweeteners, consuming too much sugar can cause spikes in insulin and lead to health complications such as obesity, heart disease and cancer.
