Calcium propionate

library / Calcium propionate

Calcium propionate is naturally found in dairy products such as butter and cheese.  As a preservative and mold inhibitors, calcium proprionate reduces the growth of most fungi and some bacteria.

Calcium propionate is typically used in baked goods, (breads, rolls, cakes, and cupcakes) as well as in natural and processed cheese, chocolate products, jelly, and preserves.

While calcium propionate remains on the GRAS list, it is slightly toxic and can be used as a pesticide, according to the Pesticide Action Network North America.

Meal Genius does not endorse products containing calcium propionate.
